Gurgaon, one of India’s fastest growing cities, has been facing challenges due to illegal constructions. Recently, authorities have stepped up action to remove unauthorised buildings and warehouses in order to maintain planned development, safety, and proper use of land. On Thursday, the Department of Town & Country Planning (DTCP) and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) conducted a major demolition drive in Palam Vihar, demolishing 22 illegal structures. This includes houses, shops, boundary walls, and under construction buildings. Over the past few months, around 50 illegal colonies have also been demolished across the city. In addition, illegal warehouses on unapproved land have been demolished in areas like Bilaspur, clearing 25,000 square feet of unauthorised warehouse space, along with boundary walls extending up to 200 metres. Recently, Gurgaon has seen a rise in complaints about illegal construction on unlicensed land adjoining licensed colonies. During the lockdown, some plot owners took advantage of reduced monitoring and built shops, commercial establishments, and warehouses without obtaining permission from authorities. Illegal warehouses and buildings not only disrupt city planning but also create safety hazards and obstruct roads. The authorities have been working to remove these unauthorised structures to ensure the city remains safe, organized, and law abiding. The demolition drive in Palam Vihar targeted residential and commercial structures. According to District Town Planner RS Batth, who was the duty magistrate, the following were demolished: 1 illegal house 4 shops 3 boundary walls 1 house under construction The drive was carried out with the support of around 50 policemen, ensuring there were no protests or incidents during the operation. Mr. Batth emphasized that no illegal buildings will be allowed in sectors, and similar drives will continue on unlicensed land within licensed colonies in the coming days. Apart from houses and shops, illegal warehouses have also been a major concern in Gurugram. In the Bilaspur area, authorities demolished two illegal warehouses covering nearly 25,000 square feet, including a 200-metre long boundary wall. These warehouses were constructed on unapproved land, outside the notified sectors of the city. Prior notices had been issued to warehouse owners, but since they failed to comply, authorities moved ahead with demolition operations. These demolitions not only free up land but also prevent unauthorised commercial activities and ensure that the city’s planned industrial zones are not misused. In another drive, the MCG enforcement team cleared government land in Indira Colony 1. Around 12 shops built on government land were demolished using earthmovers. The shops were constructed without permission for construction or commercial use. Residents tried to protest, but the police managed the situation effectively. This issue was also discussed in an MCG House meeting, after which commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh directed officials to free government land from encroachers. The importance of these Demolitions. The demolition drives are meaningful due to several reasons: 1. Safety of Residents Criminal buildings are not always built according to the building codes. They are dangerous to the inhabitants and the surrounding environments.By eliminating these structures and stores, the government will provide security to the citizens. 2. Planned City Growth Gurugram has a layout plan that has ratified sector, roads, and civic amenities. This planning is disrupted by unauthorised buildings that cause challenges such as congestion in the traffic, lack of drainage and accessibility.Eradication of illegal constructions provides smooth development of the cities. 3. Protecting Government Land State land is supposed to be used by the citizens. The construction of shops, houses or warehouses in an illegal manner renders the use of such land impossible.By releasing the areas, they can be utilized by the population. 4. Property Buyer awareness. A large number of the residents purchase illegally registered pieces of land or warehouses without knowing about the risks of doing so.The demolishing drives help raise awareness to citizens not to invest in land, houses, or commercial space without first verifying approvals. Demolition drives are carefully coordinated operations: Notices: Owners are given prior warnings. Police Support: Policemen manage crowds and prevent unrest. Machinery: Earthmovers and other equipment handle large structures safely. Legal Oversight: District town planners and magistrates supervise operations to ensure legality. The goal is to enforce rules while ensuring public safety. Residents can contribute to reducing illegal construction by: Verifying approvals: Always confirm property approvals before buying. Understanding land use: Agricultural or government land cannot be used without permission. Avoiding illegal plots or warehouses: Cheaper options may lead to legal complications. Reporting violations: Citizens can inform authorities about unauthorised structures in their neighborhoods. By following these steps, residents help Gurugram develop in a safe and organized way. Demolitions affect people in different ways: Many residents welcome the removal of illegal buildings and warehouses, as it improves safety and urban planning. Some investors who bought unapproved plots or warehouses face financial loss and legal troubles. Authorities aim to balance law enforcement with awareness, helping residents understand the importance of adhering to regulations. Even children can understand why demolitions are necessary: This teaches children the value of planning, rules, and safety. A city is like a giant puzzle. Every house, shop, road, and warehouse are in place. The city is cluttered and unsafe with the use of illegal buildings/ warehouses that are like puzzle pieces that do not fit. Obeying rules means that the city is safe, clean and well orderly. This will teach children about the importance of planning, rules and safety. The demolition drives by DTCP and MCG highlight Gurugram’s commitment to planned development, law enforcement, and safety. The residents and investors are advised to: Checks prior to an investment in land, houses or warehouses. Dangerous constructions are unlicensed. Facilitate officials in ensuring scheduled growth. These measures will help Gurugram develop into a safe, planned and organized city, which will be beneficial to the family, businesses and the residents. Read More Spike in Illegal Constructions
